Steven K. Kortanek



Steven K. Kortanek provides creative and efficient solutions to clients in the business restructuring and bankruptcy arena, with a blend of negotiation and trial skills well-suited to help foster successful turn-arounds with multiple stakeholders. Steve is also a litigator with experience spanning many years in Delaware state and federal courts.

Steve brings 25 years of focused experience to his engagements. His clients have included participants in a wide range of industries who have faced headwinds in their respective verticals and required highly engaged restructuring advice. Steve’s industry and client experience in the distressed company space spans numerous industries, including retail, energy, manufacturing, technology, transportation, horticulture, restaurant and life sciences. His clients include Chapter 11 debtors, official committees, ad hoc committees, equity sponsors, asset purchasers, lenders, estate representatives, trade creditors, senior management, and major creditor and equity holder constituencies.

Steve has represented clients in many very well-known cases over his years in practice, such as TWA, Montgomery Ward, Marvel Entertainment, Lyondell Industries, Energy Futures, and American Apparel. He has represented clients in valuation and confirmation litigation, major claim litigation, competing chapter 11 plan litigation, and other significant matters litigated in the chapter 11 context. He is also a certified mediator who serves on the panel of Mediators by appointment of the Delaware Bankruptcy Court.

Steve frequently lectures and writes on bankruptcy topics to a wide audience of other restructuring professionals. He was most recently the conference chair for American Bankruptcy Institute and the Delaware State Bar Association’s Delaware Views from the Bench conference in November (2015).
