Russell J. Chibe works on state and federal complex litigation matters at the trial and appellate phases and has significant experience with multidistrict litigation on behalf of major pharmaceutical companies. At the local level and as a member of national litigation teams, Russ defends manufacturers of medical devices and prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Additionally, Russ provides guidance to product manufacturers regarding safety, labeling, data security and regulatory compliance. Russ has assisted clients developing a variety of products from mobile apps to wearable technology to industrial lubricants. He has drafted manuals and warning labels and successfully represented clients being investigated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Russ’s mass tort experience includes ethylene oxide, latex glove, benzene, blood thinner, antibiotic, NSAID, and artificial knee and hip products liability litigation. Russ also is a primary litigator in the firm’s asbestos defense practice in Cook County and Madison County, Illinois, and has appeared regularly before Madison County judges since 2006. He has co-authored and co-presented seminars on the topics of preemption for generic over-the-counter medications, premises liability and the regulation of mobile medical apps, and published on the opioid crisis, data security and the Internet of Things. Additionally, Russ has gained exposure to immigration law, family law and federal civil rights litigation and argued before the Illinois First District Court of Appeals through the firm’s pro bono practice.

Russ is uniquely suited for working with science and engineering clients and witnesses due to his STEM background. Russ studied meteorology at Valparaiso University and went on to receive his master’s degree in atmospheric science from Colorado State University’s School of Engineering. He has completed research at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center’s Laboratory for Atmospheres and the Desert Research Institute’s Snow Peak Laboratory.

In addition to his products liability practice, Russ consults with local craft breweries regarding business development, regulatory compliance and intellectual property matters. Russ’s familiarity with the craft beer industry goes beyond the law; he has won multiple home-brewing awards and helped develop the recipe for Ironworks Altbier, a seasonal beer from Metropolitan Brewing in Chicago.

While a student at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, Russ worked in Northwestern’s Center on Wrongful Convictions, where he helped draft a clemency petition on behalf of an Indiana Death Row inmate whose sentence was subsequently commuted.

A native southsider, Russ resides in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood and is active in the Southwest Chicago Diversity Collaborative. When he’s not at the office you are most likely to find him at one of the city’s ice rinks, either playing hockey himself or coaching his daughter and her Chicago Horned Frogs teammates.
