The recently concluded, highly publicized controversy among Intracoastal Health Care Systems, Inc., the Florida Attorney General and various community groups provides several important lessons for  all nonprofit organizations in general and nonprofit health care organizations in particular. These lessons relate in large part to (a) the increasing application of nonprofit corporate and charitable trust  laws to the operations of sophisticated charitable organizations; (b) the very public, and aggressive, nature of any related state attorney general review; and (c) internal actions a nonprofit corporation  may take to reduce its exposure to any such review.
