New York partner Kristin Going was quoted in a Bloomberg article titled “Next U.S. Restructuring Epidemic: Sick Health-Care Companies.” The article discussed the growing number of hospitals and other medical companies that are likely to restructure their debt or file for bankruptcy in the coming year and how distress among health care companies can spread to other parts of the economy.

Kristin commented that smaller hospitals have been struggling for years. This has been the result of a growing number of patients enrolling in high-deductible health plans, which force patients to shoulder more of the costs when they receive treatment. This translates into bad debt from customers for hospitals and other providers.
