President Trump has not yet nominated anyone to head the Department of Justice (DOJ)’s Tax Division, which some commentators suggested could be problematic should FBI special counsel Robert Mueller seek to pursue charges against the president or his associates for tax violations. Former attorneys from the Tax Division weighed in on related issues, including what roles political appointees can play.

Joe stated, “If they [Tax Division attorneys] have a case before them for review — particularly a sensitive, high-profile case — they are going to play it straight." He also observed that the right political appointees can adeptly navigate the interactions between political staff and civil servants, particularly when it comes to the DOJ rules that “protect the independence and integrity of government operations.”
