Chicago partner Jesse Ruiz was named one of the American Diabetes Association’s 2014 Fathers of the Year, at an award ceremony on Thursday, June 12. The video created in honor of Jesse’s accomplishment features cameo appearances by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Jesse was officially named as one of the top five fundraisers nationally for the American Diabetes Association and the results will appear in an ad in USA Today.
Although Jesse is a busy partner in the Corporate & Securities Practice Group at the firm, he also participates heavily in civic-minded causes. Jesse serves on the boards of the Chicago Bar Association, Chicago Bar Foundation, Chicago Legal Clinic, Illinois Association of School Boards, Metropolitan Planning Council, Museum of Science and Industry, National Museum of Mexican Art and Rush University Medical Center, and the executive committee of the Chicago Community Trust.
In addition to his legal practice at the firm, Jesse serves as pro bono legal counsel to Get In Chicago, the Illinois Dream Fund, Erie Neighborhood House and the 14 Illinois senators and representatives who formed the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus.
In February 2011, Jesse was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to the U.S. Department of Education Equity and Excellence Commission, which published its culminating report, “For Each and Every Child” in February 2013.
In May 2011, Jesse was appointed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel as the Vice President of the Chicago Board of Education. The Board oversees the operations of the Chicago Public Schools, the third largest school district in the nation, with approximately 400,000 students and an over $5 billion operating budget.
