PHILADELPHIA, PA (May 28, 2002) — Drinker Biddle is pleased to announce the appointment of Kathryn H. Levering as the new Chair of the Litigation Department effective August 1, 2002.
Ms. Levering is a senior partner in the Labor and Employment Practice Group and has an extensive history of leadership positions within the firm. In addition to being a former managing partner, she is the founder and first Chair of the Associates Committee, has served as the firm’s Hiring Partner, is currently on the firm’s Allocations Committee and serves as the firm’s employment counselor. Ms. Levering concentrates her practice on employment-related litigation with particular emphasis in the defense of employment discrimination actions. She has tried numerous of cases to verdict in the federal courts.
Ms. Levering commented: “Since joining the firm in 1976, I have witnessed tremendous growth not only in the Litigation Department, but in the firm as a whole. I am honored to have the opportunity to encourage and continue the growth of the litigation practice and to work more extensively with all of my litigation colleagues.”
Of Drinker’s more than 450 lawyers, the 220-lawyer Litigation Department is the firm’s largest practice area. Most recently, the firm expanded its litigation practice through a combination with the San Francisco law firm Preuss Shanagher Zvoleff & Zimmer and the opening of a new office in Los Angeles. The firm’s growth campaign in California follows the addition of nine attorneys to the Insurance Group and the combination with the Intellectual Property boutique Seidel, Gonda, Lavorgna & Monaco, P.C.
Chairman of the firm, James M. Sweet, commented: “We are delighted that Kate has accepted the position of Department Chair of Litigation. She has continually demonstrated her excellence at the firm and I am confident that she will continue the success and growth of the department fostered by her predecessor Wilson M. Brown, III.” Mr. Brown is stepping down from the Chairmanship after serving as Chair or Deputy Chair for most of the last 10 years. He will be concentrating his energies on litigating major cases for the firm’s clients, with particular emphasis on the insurance practice where he is widely recognized for his successful handling of a number of major cases, both in Pennsylvania and across the country.
Ms. Levering graduated summa cum laude from Wheaton College (MA) in 1972 , is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and received her master’s degree in English Literature from Bryn Mawr College in 1973. In 1976, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is a member of the Labor and Employment Section of the American Bar Association and serves on various sub‑committees of the Section. She has been with Drinker for her entire career.
