Stuart A. Law, Jr. is a partner in the firm’s litigation practice where he concentrates on complex litigation and alternative dispute resolution.
Construction and Engineering. Stuart has represented owners, developers, contractors, engineers and architects in all phases of the construction process, on a broad range of construction projects, including: a professional baseball/football stadium in Scranton, Pa.; waterfront development at Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing; a nine-building state-of-the-art pharmaceutical research and development complex for one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies; a chemical process plant in North Carolina; a major overhaul and renovation of several oceanliners; top-secret military equipment for the United States government; construction of an underground fiber optic line from Washington, D.C., to New York; a casino project in Atlantic City; a pipeline and refineries in Central Asia; a wastewater treatment plant in Singapore; and hotels, office buildings, hospitals, university projects, utility-related projects and residential developments across the United States. In one of his more high-profile cases, Stuart tried and won a matter involving the technical design and construction of Indy cars.
A significant portion of Stuart’s construction practice is devoted to transactional work. Stuart negotiates and drafts construction and design contracts for owners, architects, engineers, and contractors on national and international projects. Stuart also regularly counsels clients on labor harmony issues, and has resolved disputes arising from charges filed with NLRB.
Environment and Energy. Stuart works with the firm’s Environment and Energy Practice Group clients prosecuting and defending cost recovery claims, environmental insurance coverage claims, as well as contribution and indemnification under Superfund and related federal and state statutes. Stuart’s transactional practice includes drafting and negotiating complex remediation and removal contracts with environmental contractors and engineers, as well as EPC agreements for energy-generating facilities and infrastructure facilities.
Other Litigation. Since he joined the firm in 1984, Stuart has handled a broad range of litigation. In addition to contract litigation, products liability litigation, insurance coverage and reinsurance litigation, and environmental litigation, he has represented many of the firm’s financial institution clients on issues relating to merger and acquisition litigation, securities litigation, real estate workout litigation, shareholder derivative class action litigation and lender liability actions, as well as claims brought under federal banking regulations and statutes.
Alternative Dispute Resolution. Stuart is one of the firm's most experienced lawyers in the area of alternative dispute resolution ("ADR"). He has arbitrated and mediated dozens of cases, both as an advocate for one of the parties and as a neutral serving as the arbitrator or mediator. The majority of these cases have involved construction, sports appeals, reinsurance, securities, or other general commercial disputes. Stuart has handled these matters under private ADR agreements between the parties, or under the rules of various ADR organizations such as AAA, CPR, JAMS, or sports sanctioning bodies. He has participated in many forms of ADR, such as mini-trials, "baseball arbitration," international arbitration under foreign law, dispute review boards and, of course, mediation. As part of his transactional practice, Stuart drafts ADR clauses and procedures for a wide variety of industries and contracts.
In General. Stuart received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his law degree from The Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University. Before joining Drinker Biddle, he served for two years as law clerk to the Hon. John B. Hannum of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
