Mary Kate McLaughlin brings more than 15 years of public and private sector experience in advocacy strategies, legislative matters, public policy, budgetary agendas and regulatory activity in support of the firm’s clients.

Prior to joining the firm, Mary Kate served in multiple roles in the administration of Governor Jack Markell, most recently as Chief of Staff for the Delaware Department of Education, where she acted as the senior advisor to the cabinet secretary. Her responsibilities included working directly with legislators to advance agency and administration initiatives and communicating with federal agencies and national organizations to monitor emerging issues.

Under Governor Markell, Mary Kate also served as deputy to the secretary for the Department of Services for Children, Youth & Families. In that role, she managed stakeholder relationships on behalf of the administration and served as the legislative liaison. She also served on the Governor’s policy team managing issues related to children, health and social services, and labor.

Mary Kate has served as senior policy advisor to Governor Ruth Ann Minner on Health, Social Services, Labor and Children’s issues and held the role of Chief Policy Advisor within the Delaware Department of Health & Social Services during the Minner administration. She began her legislative experience working with Maryland’s Workforce Investment Board under Governor Parris Glendening’s administration.

Mary Kate’s private sector experience includes serving as a public policy manager for a national pharmaceutical company where she managed U.S. government affairs for the consumer health care division. This involved communicating emerging issues to business unit heads and executive leadership to develop appropriate strategies, and serving as a liaison for 20 state-based lobbyists in analyzing state legislation to determine impact on the business.

Mary Kate also served as the government and public affairs specialist for an international energy corporation, where she monitored state-level legislative and regulatory issues to identify impacts to the company. She represented the corporation to community groups, developing strategic alliances and managing community relationships and issues.
