Stan Crosley* is of counsel to the firm’s Government & Regulatory Affairs Practice Group where he chairs the Data Privacy and Health Information Governance team, a cross-disciplinary team of lawyers with health data privacy experience. Stan is the former Chief Privacy Officer for Eli Lilly and Company, a position he held for 10 years, where he initiated Lilly’s global privacy program and negotiated the company’s compliance with FTC and State consent decrees, multiple European Data Protection Authority privacy inspections, and successful certification to the EU Safe Harbor program, gaining recognition for the program by receiving the 2007 Innovation Award from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
Stan co-founded and served as chair of the International Pharmaceutical Privacy Consortium and was a member of the IOM Medical Research and Privacy Committee. He currently serves on the boards of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the Indiana Health Information Technology, Inc., the International Data Privacy Law Journal, and The Privacy Projects. Stan is a member of the Brookings Institute’s Active Surveillance Implementation Council, which is providing guidance to the U.S. FDA on issues surrounding medical product surveillance and the FDA’s Sentinel project.
Stan is the external director of the Indiana University Center for Law, Ethics and Applied Research (CLEAR) in Health Information -- a health information strategy and management center created as a joint venture between Indiana University’s schools of Law, Medicine and Informatics.
Stan is a frequent speaker on health information technology, privacy and data protection, health research and information use, HIPAA/HITECH, EU Data Protection, International privacy and data protection, information governance, and all aspects of operating privacy programs and has appeared on CNN and in Fast Company magazine to discuss data privacy.
Stan graduated from Hillsdale College with a B.S. in biology/chemistry. He received his J.D., with honors, from Indiana University Maurer School of Law – Bloomington. Stan is a member of the board of Shepherd Community Center, which is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty on Indianapolis’ east side, and is active in his church and community.
