Alan King Featured in Crain’s Chicago Business

The “secret” life of Chicago partner Alan King was featured in Crain’s Chicago Business in an article titled, “King of Beats.”

It is a little-known fact that Alan is one of Chicago’s original house music DJs and a member of the legendary DJ crew “The Chosen Few.”

“One of the funniest things about this whole dichotomy is half the people in my life say, 'Alan King, he's a DJ?' and the other half say, 'He's a lawyer?'” said Alan.

Alan and the other members of the Chosen Few were primarily responsible for spreading the soulful brand of dance music that came to be known as “House Music” at legendary Chicago night spots during the late seventies and early eighties.

After a hiatus to focus on his developing legal career, Alan returned to the decks in 2000, keeping his musical career under wraps. That is, until an informed colleague “began to run his mouth.”

Unsurprisingly, the feedback from colleagues was positive and Alan had to conclude that the colleague who outed him did him a favor.

The article also quotes Chicago partner Jesse Ruiz, who communicated his surprise when he finally appreciated his friend's reputation in the music world upon attending the Chosen Few festival for the first time last summer.

“It's like, I jog, too, but that doesn't mean I'm an Olympic marathon runner,” said Jesse. Then he attended the festival and saw the crowd spreading over Jackson Park. “There were tens of thousands of people screaming for my law partner,” he said.
