Michael A. Smith is an associate in the firm's Real Estate and Land Use Practice Groups.  He concentrates his practice on commercial real estate transactions and land use projects.

Land Use.  Michael counsels developers and other clients through the land use approvals process on significant commercial projects including industrial, office, retail and continuing care communities.  He also advises clients on compliance with land use related statutes and regulations (including wetlands, water quality management, threatened and endangered species and affordable housing).

Acquisitions and Dispositions.  Michael assists in representing national and regional companies on a wide variety of commercial transactions, including acquisitions and dispositions of office, industrial and retail space.  His experience includes sophisticated title analysis and land use due diligence.

Financing.  Michael advises both lenders and borrowers on loan transactions secured by real estate, including construction and permanent financings, refinancings and loan assumptions.

Leasing.  Michael represents both landlords and tenants in all aspects of lease transactions.  He has experience with retail, office and industrial leases.

Condominium Law.  Michael counsels clients on commercial and residential condominium projects. His experience includes preparation of detailed formation documents under the New Jersey Planned Real Estate Development Full Disclosure Act and the federal Interstate Land Sales Full Disclosure Act.

Education.  Michael received his B.A., cum laude, from Binghamton University in 2003 and his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law in 2006, where he served as an associate editor of the Global Studies Law Review.

In General.  Michael is a LEED® Accredited Professional, a credential awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to those professionals who have demonstrated an advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices and in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System™.
