Marvin Garfinkel is of counsel in the firm's Real Estate Practice Group.
Marvin has 53 years of experience in real estate, workouts and other business transactions including work with shopping centers, office buildings and other commercial properties. He has represented real estate developers, traditional and opportunity investors, institutional and non-institutional lenders, title insurers and homebuilders. Marvin has also represented distributors of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Marvin’s extensive writings include legal journals and trade publications. He is the author of “Real World Document Drafting: A Dispute-Avoidance Approach” (ALI-ABA) which covers the legal principles and skills related to negotiating and drafting a range of contracts. He co-authored the Bankruptcy chapter for the International Council of Shopping Centers treatise on Key Shopping Center Legal Issues; authored a chapter on workouts in Clark Boardman’s treatise on “The Law of Distressed Real Estate”. He regularly teaches courses for ALI-ABA and other CLE providers, also appearing on ABA, state, and local bar association programs. Marvin was an advisor for the Restatement of Mortgages and the Restatement of Servitudes. He authored an article on "Rejection in Bankruptcy of Shopping Center REAs" published in the
Real Property, Probate and Trust Journal.
Marvin earned his J.D.,
magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was associate editor of the
Law Review and member of the Order of the Coif. He earned an LL.M. in taxation from New York University and was a charter member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, chairing its Common Interest Ownership Committee. He has held leadership positions in the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, American and Pennsylvania bar association sections and committees.
