Associate
Jennifer L. Cohen is an associate in the firm’s Environmental Practice Group. She focuses her practice on environmental and energy matters.
Transactional. Jennifer evaluates and allocates environmental liabilities to quantify the risks associated with corporate, real estate, restructuring and financing transactions. Utilizing her experience on both multimillion dollar deals and small transactions, Jennifer assists in developing the scope of environmental due diligence and implementing that due diligence for both acquisitions and divestitures. Additionally, Jennifer prepares transactional documents and counsels clients on the structuring and negotiation of deals from an environmental perspective, including negotiation with federal and state agencies and other interested parties to secure appropriate liability protections and related funding. She also represents clients in connection with the sale and lease of mineral and water rights, particularly within the Marcellus Shale Natural Gas Field Formation.
Regulatory & Land Use. Jennifer represents clients in a wide range of compliance and enforcement matters before both state and federal environmental and energy regulatory authorities. In connection with matters such as Brownfield’s redevelopment, railroad right-of-ways, natural gas pipelines, landfills, air and water pollution issues, asbestos and lead based paint, she has counseled clients and negotiated with governmental entities to obtain the least burdensome operating and development authorizations. Jennifer also counsels clients on environmental and energy compliance matters following acquisitions and divestitures to ensure that no loose-ends remain. She has conducted internal investigations for clients relating to environmental compliance issues. In addition, Jennifer provides advice relating to legislative developments and drafts comments for submittal to the appropriate governmental entities.
Litigation. Jennifer has represented private companies as well as local government entities in both state and federal litigation matters. Her experience litigating environmental and energy matters includes representations in environmental cleanup, products liability, citizens suit, railroad right-of-way, and public utility matters.
In General. Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree,
magna cum laude, in history and philosophy of science from the University of Pittsburgh. She earned her J.D.,
magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, also from the University of Pittsburgh. Jennifer was a research editor of the
University of Pittsburgh Law Review and vice justice of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity during law school. She also earned the Cali Excellence for the Future Awards for her studies in constitutional, tort and environmental law.
Currently, Jennifer is a committee member for the Delaware Valley chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association as well an active member of the Environmental and Energy Law and Public Utility Law Sections of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the American Bar Association, Section of Environment, Energy and Resources.
