District Policy Group President Ilisa Halpern Paul’s latest Morning Consult column, co-authored by Harm Reduction Coalition (HRC) Policy Director Daniel Raymond, a District Policy Group client, discusses pending federal legislation addressing the prescription opioid crisis and recommends a systematic approach to tackling the barriers to effective treatment.

The column, “We Can Spend Our Way Out Of the Opioid Crisis,” emphasizes that substantial federal investment is needed to provide medication-assisted treatment, counseling and other support needed to treat opioid addiction and prevent overdose.

While the House recently passed 18 bills to address opioid prescribing, medication-assisted treatment and access to Naloxone, the overdose reversal mediation, the call for more federal funding is dividing parties. Ilisa and Daniel assert the opioid crisis is not a partisan issue and that a substantial new investment in the nation’s treatment and public health infrastructure is needed.

“We need to train providers, increase workforce capacity, integrate medication-assisted treatment into more settings, improve screening for opioid use disorders in health care setting and utilize telehealth and health IT tools to improve access and care coordination,” they say.
