Chicago associate Erin Norby authored an article for MedStaff News titled, “Value-Based Purchasing is Here: Preparing Your Medical Staff for New Reimbursement Methodologies.”
The article discusses the final rule outlining the performance standards and implementation details for the new Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program (VBP) published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Apr. 29.
Erin notes that, “The new reforms will force hospitals to meet quality standards not only to access payment incentives, but also to maintain current reimbursement rates.”
She explores how hospitals can revisit and potentially revamp bylaws, codes of conduct, peer review policies, and other policies and procedures affecting the relationships between their hospital, medical staff committees, and medical staff members while preparing for VBP.
“Now more than ever, it is important for hospitals to clearly document their expectations of, and protocols for working with staffed physicians” says Erin.
“Hospitals dedicated to accessing favorable reimbursement from federal payment programs should consider whether updating their current policies and practices could move them closer to recognizing the quality improvement necessary to take part in VBP.”
