Cheryl Orr, partner and chair of Drinker Biddle’s national Labor and Employment Practice, has been recognized as a Top Labor and Employment attorney in California by the Daily Journal. The list recognizes California’s top attorneys who have made a significant impact in employment and labor law.
Cheryl has defended 17 class, collective and representative actions in the last year alone for well-known and long-standing clients in the retail, health-care and for-profit education industries.
The write-up highlights Cheryl’s quick resolutions, including a potential class action lawsuit against a major national retailer. A former employee sought to certify a class action consisting of all current and former non-exempt retail store employees across all of the company’s California’s stores. Cheryl and her team produced compliant polices and information specific to the plaintiff, demonstrating the claims were not common to all and causing the plaintiff’s counsel to dismiss all potential class claims.
“Probably 20 to 25 percent of potential class actions that cross our desk we can resolve sooner rather than later,” Cheryl said. “If you marshal your facts quickly and spend time with the client to understand their business and policies, we have often been successful in opening up a dialogue with plaintiffs’ counsel to explain why the case isn’t well postured for class treatment. Then we can persuade them to walk away or to resolve matters on an individual basis.”
“I’m blessed with a strong team. We are all interested in our work, and they are as invested in our clients and outcomes as I am.”
