Philadelphia partner Lawrence Fox was quoted in a Law360 article titled, “US Law Firms Still Flirting With Going Public.” The article discussed the debate over the barring of nonlawyer ownership of firms. In the U.S., nonlawyer ownership of law firms is barred in all 50 States (although allowed in Washington, D.C. on a limited basis), but in the U.K. Gateley PLC has become the first publicly traded U.K. law firm.

Larry commented with concerns that this could lead to putting profits before clients, causing serious ethical issues. “To me, that would be the end of the profession and a disaster in the making,” he said.
