Chicago partner Doug Swill was quoted in the Chicago Tribune in an article titled, “Seven North Shore Private Pediatrician Practices Combine as Doctors Adjust to Changing Financial Reality.”

The article notes that as doctors and private practices get swallowed up by hospital systems in a wave of consolidation, some are bucking the trend and retaining their independence and control by banding together with former competitors to create their own “supergroups.”

It focuses on one particular group of North Shore pediatricians, former competitors who are banding together to create a pediatric supergroup — the largest in the Chicago area — under the banner PediaTrust LLC. Chicago partners Jennifer Breuer and Keith Anderson, worked with PediaTrust on its merger.

Through consolidation, a larger group of doctors gains bargaining clout on several fronts, including negotiations with hospitals and insurers, as opposed to a two- or three-physician practice.

Looking to the future, Doug said, “There will be more group roll-ups, mainly in the specialties.” "You need scale, you need size,” he said.

He said the merger will benefit patients, largely because it will allow physicians to pool resources to be able to better afford investments in imaging equipment, electronic health records and other improvements.
