Chicago partner Fatema Zanzi moderated a panel discussion on February 21 on “Ethical Issues when Providing Care to Pediatric and Adolescent Patients.” The discussion is part of AHLA’s two-part webinar series on pediatric behavioral health care, including treatment, consent, familial/guardian disagreements, and more.

A case study approach was used by experienced panelists, including two in-house counsel at pediatric hospitals and a physician bioethicist, to discuss the framework for navigating difficult legal and ethical issues facing pediatric behavioral health patients and their families and caregivers.

The facts also allowed for in-depth discussions of limits of parental and guardian authority, resolution of disagreements related to choice of treatment modality, capacity to authorize treatment, duty to protect and warn, and moral objections to both treating and safeguarding patients.
