The event was designed to provide in-house counsel with practical advice on the latest developments in a wide variety of practice areas. Helen and Alexa’s presentation covered paid sick leave obligations for federal contractors.
On September 29, 2016, the Department of Labor issued a Final Rule implementing Executive Order 13706 which requires certain federal contractors and subcontractors to provide employees with up to 56 hours (7 days) of paid sick leave per year for those who are performing work on or in connection with covered contracts with the federal government. Paid sick leave includes time away from work for an employee’s own injury or illness, family care, and absences caused by domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. The Final Rule applies to certain types of new contracts and replacement contracts with the federal government that result from solicitations issued on or after January 1, 2017, and takes effect January 1, 2017, regardless of the change in administration.
