The Drinker Biddle International Team is launching a series of webinar presentations that focus on issues of interest for companies doing business across the globe. Whether your organization is already engaged in cross-border transactions and contracting or whether you are looking for new strategies to target emerging international markets, this series will provide an overview of important considerations and best practices. Over the course of the coming year, topics will include data security and privacy, international arbitration, customs and trade regulation, and anti-corruption issues.

In the first webinar of the series, Drinker Biddle lawyer Jeremiah Posedel addressed the topic of “Information Privacy & Data Protection: Understanding the United States Approach and How It Applies to Your Global Enterprise.”

The United States applies a “sectoral” approach to information privacy and data protection, relying on a mix of legislation, regulation and industry self-regulation. As a result, the United States has produced a maze of varying regulations at all levels that apply to different types of data, consumers, industries and activities. Despite this sectoral approach, there is not a business operating in the United States that is not directly affected by multiple information privacy and security requirements. Ensuring that you process data – from employee data to customer data, sensitive and not – in a manner that complies with these constantly changing and expanding United States privacy laws is critical. Equally vital is understanding these laws so that you can build and implement a privacy strategy that fits your business and allows you to leverage data in a responsible way. This webinar will provide participants with an overview of the United States approach to information privacy and data protection, and a better understanding of how this approach applies to your business.
