Chicago associate Nick Guzman spoke to the International Trade committee of Index Nuevo León, a maquiladora trade association based in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, on March 14, 2013.

Nick’s presentation focused on importer obligations and responsibilities before U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

His presentation centered around the concept of “reasonable care” under U.S. Customs law and included brief descriptions of importer obligations for the risk areas of customs valuation, tariff classification, and special preference programs, with a special emphasis on the use of prior disclosures to mitigate risk.

Nick’s presentation was intended to provide a Spanish-speaking audience the U.S. perspective on trade compliance.
