Washington, D.C., government relations director Julie Scott Allen, and government relations manager Erin Will Morton, presented at the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Annual Meeting, May 14 -15, 2011 in Austin, Texas.  Julie and Erin discussed the implications of congressional decisions on the fiscal year 2012 federal budget and health reform implementation for independent clinical laboratories.   AAB and its advocacy organization, the National Independent Laboratory Association (NILA), are long-standing clients of the firm and represent regional and clinical laboratories across the United States.

Julie and Erin, members of the Government & Regulatory Affairs Practice Group’s Health Team, outlined several of the provisions in the health reform law that directly or indirectly affect clinical laboratories, including Accountable Care Organizations, state health exchanges and mandatory benefit requirements, and Medicare Part B provider cuts.  They also discussed the outlook for health care providers given the budget debate underway in Congress, and worked in a roundtable setting with clinical laboratory owners and managers to develop a strategic plan for addressing business and patient care issues in relation to the budget and health reform implementation before Congress and the federal regulatory agencies.
