Pro Bono Opportunities

Drinker Biddle remains strongly committed to our long tradition of handling pro bono work and taking on unpopular causes.

Each of Drinker Biddle’s lawyers has the opportunity to perform pro bono work and is encouraged to do so. Although pro bono work is not assigned or required, we give associates billable hour credit for their work on pro bono cases. Lawyers are not limited to pro bono work in only one or two “approved” areas; rather, our lawyers are free to choose the kinds of pro bono work that they find interesting and personally fulfilling. Their choices are reflected in a diverse and wide-ranging pro bono practice that extends from high-profile litigation, to defending child abuse and domestic violence cases, to writing the bylaws for a small nonprofit organization.

Pro bono matters are handled with the same attention and enthusiasm that paying clients receive. A supervising partner is named for each pro bono case, and we commit the full resources of the firm to servicing them. In addition to the time we invest, we devote significant financial resources for experts, investigators, transcripts and other expenses necessary to provide high-quality service. While our supervising partners provide support and mentoring, we give younger lawyers the freedom to work on these cases with a great degree of independence. We view pro bono work as another way for new associates to gain career experience in primary lawyering roles, such as appearing in court, trying cases, arguing motions, counseling clients, and documenting and managing transactions.

I represented a Marine Corps Sergeant and Gulf War veteran who gained full legal access to his infant son, after months of motions, witness interviews, hearing preparation, and two oral arguments.
